Within three years of the arrival of the compact disc in the industry, one million CD players have already been sold in the electronics market. In comparison, it took more than a dec ade for the manufacturers of colored television to sell one million TVs. Shortly after the introduction of the CD, the Digital Audio Tape (DAT) was launched. Unfortunately, it was met with abrupt opposition from music publishers and composers since they feared the possibility of the piracy, especially because of the almost perfect duplication capability and excellent sound quality of the DAT. From the kick-off, RIAA contends for a tool to be positioned inside the recorder in order to prevent duplication. Even after this tool, which is known as the "serial copy management system†, was placed on all DAT recorders sent to the United States, composers and music publishers continued claiming for fees on every DAT tape or machine sold as a compensation in case of home taping. This dispute led to the lack of support of the format from the record industry. Seeing that the DAT format is not feasible, record labels decided not to produce or market pre-recorded DATs. Since there is no pr e-recorded tape, no one will buy a recorder. Ultimately, since there are no sales for recorders, a market for pre-recorded tape is non-existent. In 1990, the mishmash of the Internet and digital audio started an explosive phenomenon – the creation of the Moving Pictures Experts Group-1 Layer-3 or simply MP3. Sophocles, Oedipus the King Essay The following analysis will examine Oedipus the King, by Sophocles. The following questions will be addressed: What is the historical context of this period? What are the storylines, as revealed in the document? What does the document reveal about the Greek notion of fate and free-will? Who was the author and does he reveal a bias? What was the author’s intent in writing this and whom did he see as his audience? And lastly, what stands out as particularly meaningful and why? The historical context of the period reveals the Greeks believed the gods could see everything that humans did and could, if they choose, fulfill such needs as food, shelter and clothing as well as wants like love, wealth and victory. [1] The Greeks were often described as â€Å"independent-minded† and there seems to be no doubt that geography played a major role in shaping that character. It was the mountains and the sea that molded Greece and Greeks into what they were. [2] Polytheism is a belief in many gods and syncretism reflects a willingness to add foreign gods into the belief system-even if the new additions dont exactly fit. 3] Fate was very important to the ancient Greeks, which played a huge role in there daily life actions and behaviors which they believed would affect their fate in life. The Greeks created Greek mythology; this was the body of their myths and teachings. It was concerning their gods and goddesses, their heroes, and the nature of the world to them. â€Å"It was God that aided you, men say, and you are held with God’s assistance to have saved our lives Now Oedipus, Greatest in all men’s eyes, here falling at your feet we all entreat you, find us some strength for rescue. [4] The storyline of Oedipus- the King, Sophocles starts in front of the palace of Oedipus at Thebes. Oedipus is the King of Thebes, this is where the play is based around. â€Å"Oedipus the King† was believed to be written around 430 B. C, in the city of Thebes. A horrible plague has come into this city, making everyone sick and dying. Oedipus comes through the central doors to find a priest and a crowd of children praying to the gods to free them from this horrible curse, the plague. The priest is begging Oedipus to go and save the city. Oedipus explains to the priest how he has sent Creon who is his brother-in-law to speak to Apollo at his Pythian temple to find out how to save the city. Once Creon arrives back he tells Oedipus what he has heard from God. He explains that God commands them to drive out a pollution from their land, a pollution that had grown ingrained within their land. They were talking about when Laius was murdered. Lauis was the king before Oedipus had piloted the state. His murdered was said to happen many years before this plague had happened, and no one took any action into finding out what happened, or who had done it. Everyone who was with Lauis at the time was killed as well, except for one messenger who fled in terror. This messenger could only speak of one thing; how there were many robbers, and this king was killed by many. Now Oedipus goes on trying to solve this murder in order to help his city. He soon will learn of Creon turning against him. He then turns to his wife Jocasta to help him better understand events that lead up to the death of Lauis, and to understand more about the death of Lauis. After this is done you start to get an understanding of what this play is really about. The notions of fate and free-will are revealed during the play when they are talking about Oedipus’s life. This is a dramatic tale of a great king who is brought down by â€Å"fate† and the destiny of the gods. Prophecy is one of the main things of Oedipus the king. Oedipus tells Jocasta whom is his wife, of a prophecy he has heard as a young man. This prophecy was that he would kill his father and sleep with his mother. Jocasta then tells Oedipus of a prophecy just like his that was given to Laius; her son would grow up to kill his father. Oedipus seems only to want to flee his fate, but his fate continually catches up with him. OEDIPUS: â€Å"Why should man fear since chance is all in all for him, and he can clearly foreknow nothing? Best to live lightly, as one can, unthinkingly. [5] Oedipus has a strong will to find out about his past, and to discover the truth about things in his life. Jocasta is the one trying to keep him from clearly getting answers to things he wants to know. â€Å"Jocasta: I beg you- do not hunt this out- I beg you, if you have any care for your own life. What I am suffering is enough. [6] Oedipus then responds to her showing us how he is free willed and wants to know his fate in life. Oedipus: Break out what will! I at least shall be willing to see my ancestry, though humble. Perhaps she is ashamed of my low birth, for she has all women’s high flown pride. But I account myself a child of Fortune, beneficent Fortune, and I shall not be dishonored. [7] It just proves that Oedipus has a strong will of finding things out no matter what happens. He believes his fate will play out one way or the other. The author of Oedipus is Sophocles was an innovator of drama. His main stories were, Sophocles, Euripides and Aeschylus. These three were well-known as masters of tragedy. 8] Sophocles’s most famous surviving work includes the Theban plays: Oedipus Rex (sometimes called Oedipus Tyrannus) Oedipus at Colonus, and Antigone. There are different quotes through out Oedipus the King that leads you to believe Sophocles as an unbiased writer in this play. â€Å"But do not charge me on obscure opinion without some proof to back it. It’s not just lightly to count your knaves as honest man, nor honest men as knaves. To throw away an honest friend is, as it were, to throw your life away, which a man loves the best. †[9] There are so many different lessons to be learned in Oedipus the king. These are lessons I believe that everyone today could benefit from. It shows the downfalls of someone being arrogance and selfishness, what kind of actions can happen from being judgmental, and the repercussions of being quick to act without sufficient knowledge. These are things that a lot of people in the world do not understand well, and a lot of times many people do a lot of things with out thinking or worrying about any repercussion. The author’s intent is clear because he shows you that we shouldn’t temp fate. What’s going to happen will happen, and in this case it did happen in a disaster. Jocasta: Do not concern yourself abut this matter; listen to me and learn that human beings have no part in the craft of prophecy. [10] It seems apparent that the intended audience would have been the people who already knew the Oedipus story. These people would experience the effects of a dramatic irony as they watched the unfortunate events play out during the play. In conclusion, what stands out as meaningful from Oedipus’s story is that no matter what you try to do fate will always win. You can not do wrong to someone or something and get away with it. Over time it’ll come back to you and it won’t always work out the way you want it to. This historical period has lead you through a time when someone did something wrong and was taught a lesson. In Oedipus’s story you gain an insight of the Greek tragedy, and you learn about fate and irony. Learning about fate and free will is something that allows you to get a better understanding of the two. When you see something happening to someone that’s so tragic, it gives you a better understanding of the meaning, and allows you to see things really do happen to people who do wrong.

Effect Of Boiling On The Vitamin C Biology Essay Abstract This experiment was designed to investigate the effect of boiling on the vitamin C content of selected vegetables (bitter gourd, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, green pepper, sweet peas, long beans and tomato). Vegetables were boiled for 10 minutes. The juices of both raw and boiled vegetables were extracted and titrated with 1 cm3 of 0.1% DCPIP solution. The volume of each juice needed to decolourise the DCPIP solution was measured and the vitamin C content was determined. The same procedure was repeated with other types of vegetables. The statistical t-test (paired sample) showed that the vitamin C content of raw vegetables is significantly higher than that of boiled vegetables. The results support the hypothesis; boiling reduces the vitamin C content of vegetables. Since it is water soluble, excessive amounts of vitamin C are excreted via urine.1 Deficiency in vitamin C can lead to scurvy.  [5]  Sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits and fresh vegetables.  [6]   Cumulative word count: 337 The main biologically active form of vitamin C is ascorbic acid. In this experiment, the presence of ascorbic acid is indicated by a redox dye, DCPIP (2,6-dichloroindophenol).  [7]  DCPIP reacts with ascorbic acid in a 1:1 ratio. It is assumed that the vegetable tissue component which reduces the DCPIP rapidly is vitamin C. This experiment was aimed to compare the vitamin C content of raw and boiled vegetables, thus determining the best method of consuming them so that the intake of vitamin C is maximised. Vegetables selected are those which are eaten raw or after being boiled by Malaysians. Vegetables such as broccoli and green pepper were selected because of their high vitamin C content so that the loss of vitamin C during boiling is more significant. Furthermore, the vitamin C content of cooking water of broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and tomato were also determined to identify whether the vitamin C content was lost due to heat from boiling or leaching into the cooking water. These vegetables were chosen because they are the typical ingredients to make vegetable soup. Some people rarely eat raw vegetables.  [13]  14The results from this experiment can be used as evidence that eating fresh, raw vegetables are healthier as they contain more nutritional values. Consuming boiled vegetables may result in a lower intake of vitamin C because the water used for boiling is usually discarded. Thus, it may also be advisable to use the cooking water as a soup base to prevent wastage of vitamin C. Null Hypothesis There is no significant difference between the vitamin C content of raw and boiled vegetables. Apparatus Test tubes, test tube rack, 500ml volumetric flask, pipette (to measure accurately to 1cm3), burette, pestle and mortar, measuring balance, glass rod, 200ml beaker, blender, a stainless steel pot and stove. Materials 0.1% DCPIP solution, vitamin C tablet, distilled water, muslin cloth and eight different types of vegetables listed in Table 5. The vitamin C was extracted by blending 100g cabbage in 100ml distilled water using a commercial blender. The juice extracted was then boiled for 10 minutes. Another 100g of cabbage was boiled in 100ml cooking water for the same period of time. The boiled cabbage was blended to extract its juice. The control experiment was carried out using raw cabbage juice. Besides, this is the conventional way of cooking. Thus, the method of boiling before blending was used. The ratio of cabbage to cooking water to be used was identified. 100g of cabbage was added to either 100ml (1:1 ratio) or 200ml (1:2 ratios) distilled water and boiled. This makes the procedure easier and shortens the experimental time. Cumulative word count: 1354 Real Experimental Procedures I Preparing standard vitamin C solution A vitamin C tablet was crushed into fine powder with a pestle and mortar. 62.5mg of the vitamin C powder was weighed using a measuring balance. The powder was dissolved in a 200ml beaker by adding 10ml portions of distilled water. The solution was stirred using a glass rod. The solution was transferred into a 500ml volumetric flask. The beaker and glass rod were rinsed with successive portions of distilled water and the washings was transferred into the flask. The solution was made up to mark using a dropper. The solution is now exactly 0.125 mg of ascorbic acid per cm3 of solution. Steps 2 to 4 were repeated to prepare different concentrations of vitamin C solution listed in Table 4 using different amounts of vitamin C powder. II Preparing standard curve of vitamin C 1cm3 of 0.1% DCPIP solution was pipette into a test tube. A burette was filled with 0.125 mg cm-3 vitamin C solution. The vitamin C solution was added drop by drop into the test tube containing DCPIP solution until the blue DCPIP decolourises. The tube was shaken gently after each drop. The volume of vitamin C solution needed was measured. The procedure was repeated twice to get an average titre. Steps 1 to 4 were repeated using vitamin C solution of concentrations listed in Table 4. A standard vitamin C curve (Graph 1) was plotted based on the result. The volume of the freshly extracted vegetable juice needed to decolourise the DCPIP solution was determined using steps 1 to 4 in Experiment II. 100g of bitter guard was boiled for 10 minutes in 200ml boiling water using a 5-inch-deep stainless steel pot. After 10 minutes, the boiled bitter gourd was immediately removed from the cooking water and cooled by immersing in an ice-cold water bath for 5 minutes. Steps 2 and 3 were repeated using the boiled vegetables. This experiment was repeated with the other vegetables listed in Table 5. The vitamin C content of all vegetables was calculated using the standard vitamin C curve. The data of volume needed and vitamin C content were tabulated. A graph of vitamin C content of raw and boiled vegetables was plotted. A t-test was used to statistically analyse the data. IV Identifying how vitamin C is loss The cooking water of broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and tomato was collected. 200ml distilled water was added to the cooking water. It was cooled by immersing in an ice-cold water bath for 5 minutes. Steps 1 to 4 in Experiment II and steps 8 and 9 in Experiment III were repeated using the cooking water. The difference between vitamin C content of vegetables before and after boiling (inclusive of its cooking water) was calculated. A graph of vitamin C content of cooking water was plotted. Figure 2 shows that raw vegetables have higher vitamin C content than boiled vegetables, suggesting that it is best to eat raw vegetables rather than those boiled. Nevertheless, if vegetables were to be boiled, it is advisable to serve the vegetables with the cooking water since vitamin C is found in the cooking water after boiling (Figure 3). Unlike the other three vegetables, the total vitamin C content of cabbage after boiling is 0.0460 mg cm-3 higher than that of raw cabbage. This may be due to the more complete extraction of juice as the cabbage tissue is softer after boiling. This agrees with my results that vitamin C is present in the cooking water after boiling.  [22]   Cumulative word count: 3360 Evaluation The tube was shaken gently and consistently during each experiment after each drop of vitamin C solution to allow rapid diffusion of vitamin C throughout the DCPIP solution. Shaking the tube too vigorously may cause oxygen from air to dissolve and oxidise the reduced DCPIP solution, restoring the blue colour. Then, an increased volume of vegetable juice may be needed. All vegetable juices, as well as those boiled, should be titrated with the DCPIP solution once they have been extracted because vitamin C is easily destroyed by the atmospheric oxygen via oxidation. The DCPIP solution must be freshly prepared on the day of experiment. The DCPIP solution was filtered to avoid any impurities suspending at the bottom of test tube. Similarly, the vegetable juice was filtered to remove the vegetable pulp which may clog the burette tap. The non-edible parts and damaged leaf or stem of the vegetable samples were removed. Vegetables were cut into small cubes of about the same size so that the surface area exposed to the cooking water is constant. They were added into the pot only after the water starts boiling to keep the boiling temperature and duration constant. A stainless steel pot was used as ordinary pots may have transition metals which may oxidise the ascorbic acid. Before starting the experiment, a rough titration was run to determine the exact colour change at the end point. For cauliflower, the colour may change from blue to pale yellow, which is the colour of the cauliflower juice. [Appendix] To minimise inaccuracy, the procedure was repeated to get an average titre. Eight types of vegetables were sampled to obtain enough replicates to support the hypothesis. A burette and pipette were used because of their high accuracy. Burette readings are accurate to 0.05cm3. Since two readings are taken, there is a combined error of  ± 0.1cm3. If the titre is 20.00cm3, the possible error due to apparatus is 0.5%. They were bought from a hypermarket and were chosen based on their appearance such as colour and degree of damage. Boiling may have different effects on different varieties of vegetables as their nutritional contents vary. Using only eight types of vegetables may give a wrong representation on the effect of boiling on the vitamin C content of all vegetables. The experiment can also be modified to investigate the effect of other cooking methods like deep-frying, steaming and microwave cooking on the vitamin C content of vegetables thus determining the best cooking method which results in minimal vitamin C loss. To ensure complete extraction of ascorbic acid, the vegetables can be blended with 5% metaphosphoric acid. This acid inactivates the enzyme ascorbic acid oxidase (an enzyme present in many plant tissue) which catalyses the oxidation of ascorbic acid when the cell components of a vegetable is mixed during blending.  [24]  25 Conclusion Boiling significantly reduces the vitamin C content of vegetables (by 56.22%). Have you ever really wondered what the rain is really made of? Is that just water or is it acid slowly streaming down out there? That rain you hear just might be acid rain, it could change the way you live your life.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The commonly used terms â€Å"acid rain† and â€Å"acid precipitation† describe specific forms of a type of pollution described generally as â€Å"acid deposition.† Harmful gases that rise into the air mix with cloud moisture, sunlight, and oxidants. There they chemically combine into dilute sulfuric and nitric acids, which fall back to the earth. This is acid deposition. The major contributing pollutants are sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide (Morgan, 5). â€Å"Acid rain† is basically rainwater with a pH level lower than 5.6 (Morgan, 3). The term pH means â€Å"potential hydrogen†. When a substance has a pH level of 7, it is completely neutral with the same number of hydroxyl and hydrogen ions (Pringle, 6). Acidity in the atmosphere can be changed by many natural things. When a volcano erupts, sulfur dioxide is spewed out. Droughts produce unusually dry soil conditions allowing dust particles to be carried upward into the air, neutralizing the acids that may be present at the time (Pringle, 4). Acid Rain can come in concentrations sometimes more acidic than lemon juice. These pollutants reach the earth in rain, snow, hail, sleet, or fog. The rain at the beginning of a shower is usually more acidic than the rain that follows. Dry acidic particles can also fall from the atmosphere. Because wind can carry gases and moisture for hundreds of miles, even areas far away from the source bear the effects of acid deposition (Durha m, 10). There are of course, many things that we as humans do everyday to promote and support the continuation of acid rain. Not intentionally, of course. When the fossil fuel, (i.e. coal) is used, the sulfur in it mixes with Oxygen in the air to form sulfur dioxide. The sulfur dioxide is eventually turned into acid over a matter of days. Coal-fired power plants are the single greatest cause of acid rain in the United States. They account for two-thirds of all sulfur dioxide emissions in the US (Pringle 16; Morgan 75). Both of these have proven devastating to both aquatic animals and forests. Billions of dollars have been spent to correct and try to fix what acid rain had done to buildings and monuments. Era of Fashion

An Era of Fashion Webster dictionary states that fashion is â€Å"The make or form of something. The prevailing style during a particular time. † Personally, I believe fashion is not Just what you wear but a state of mind. I once read a quote by Coco Channel that read, â€Å"Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will â€Å"assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safer, the creatures of the commonplace the slaves of the ordinary. † This to me said it all.Fashion is about showing the true o and the statement that you want to make on that particular day, weather that statement is bold or casual in sweat pants and a white T. Fashion is not Just what we see everyday in magazines. Fashion is what you make it. During the pre ass's through the early to mid-ass's fashion trends such as the mini skirt, maxi skirt, mini dress, the halter neck cat dress, flared trousers, empire dresses, high waist banana sears, bell bottoms, army Jackets and Jumpsuits were all the rage.Two of the more well known people I believed to represent the ass's well was, Affray Facet, who cocked the feathered hairstyle and ass's style well for the ladies and Elvis Presley who was well known for always looking amazing in Jumpsuits showed the boys exactly how to make an outfit look good. In the photos I have chosen to use you will see my Grandparent's, my Uncle, my mother and my father. My Grandparent's and Uncle have always lived in Tucson, Az as for my mother for most of her life has lived in Tucson, except with a two year influence from her time spent in California.As for my father he was born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas until his college years when he moved to Tucson. The pictures were not taken for a particular reason other than to remember the time my father went to the Pimp Air Show and the time my mother spent visiting Harbor Island. The trends in both hair style and garments are shown. For instance my mother in the black an d white photograph shows Just how being â€Å"hip† in that time of age would have been represented, which was shown by the mini dress and having hair as big as you could get it to go. The types of clothing shown in my pictures are more on the casual side of everyday life in the U.S. Back in the ass's. Because fashion has always reflected its moment in history one could say that clothes mocked their environment. More designers were finally getting the chance to travel. This gave them a chance to see other nations. Viewing other nations meant new colors, textures, materials and ideas. There was now more to fashion than the same old boring prints. What is special about the ass's clothing to me are the patterns and the colors. The ass's was bold and therefore the colors and shapes of the garments were bigger than life. Personally, it seems to me that living in the ass's meant that one could not be shy!This era in time was such a big influence on the world and trends can still be seen in present day. For example, â€Å"That ass's Show,† puts forth a great understanding of the prints, textures, and all around style of the ass's. Another show that from time to time will represent the ass's is â€Å"The Rachel Zoe Project. † Rachel Zoe is a fashion stylist, who herself every so often will show high wasted pants, big earrings, big hair, patterns, and styles from the ass's. All in all I believe that the seventies was an amazing and inspiring era. QUESTIONS: 1 . The clothes do inspire me, the whole 60-70 era inspires me. Yes its fashion. Fashion is not one particular trend or look.
